Why KUHL Renegade Shorts Are the Only Adventure Shorts You’ll Ever Need

Posted on June 19, 2025June 19, 2025

The KUHL Renegade Shorts are widely recognized as a benchmark for durable, versatile hiking and everyday shorts. We reviewed the original Renegade Shorts over three years ago and it remained our favorite travel and adventure shorts.

Design & Materials

  • Fabric: The shorts are made from KUHL’s proprietary DURALAX fabric, a blend of 95% nylon and 5% spandex, weighing about 170g/m². This material offers a soft, cotton-like feel while remaining durable and abrasion-resistant.
  • Stretch & Comfort: The 2-way stretch provides moderate flexibility, making them suitable for both hiking and casual wear, though they are not as stretchy as some sport-oriented options.
  • Water Resistance: A durable water repellent (DWR) finish helps repel light moisture, keeping you dry in light rain or during stream crossings.
  • Sun Protection: The fabric is rated UPF 50+, offering excellent protection from the sun.

Fit & Sizing

  • Inseam Options: Available in 8″, 10″, and 12″ inseam lengths, catering to a range of style and coverage preferences.
  • Waistband: Features a Free Ryde waistband lined with soft micro chamois for added comfort. The waistband is not elastic or adjustable, so accurate sizing is important.
  • Closure: The previous design uses a snap button and zipper fly. This updated version uses a button waistband closure (more secure) and same zipper fly.

Pockets & Storage

  • Pocket Layout: The Renegade shorts are known for their abundance of pockets—up to 8 in total, including:
    • Two hand pockets
    • Two back pockets (one with secure zip or Velcro)
    • Two zippered cargo pockets
    • Two drop-in phone pockets
  • Functionality: Most pockets are well-sized and functional for hiking essentials, though the rear Velcro pockets can be hard to access with a backpack.

Performance & Durability

  • Trail Use: The shorts excel on rugged trails, thanks to their tough fabric and double stitching. They resist abrasion, dry quickly, and maintain their shape after repeated washing and heavy use.
  • Everyday Versatility: A relaxed and casual style for everyday wear, making them a favorite for travel and urban outings as well as outdoor adventures.
  • Breathability: The fabric breathes well, contributing to comfort during hot weather or strenuous activity.

Final Observations

The KUHL Renegade Shorts are a top choice for those seeking a blend of durability, comfort, and functionality. Their robust fabric, ample pocket options, and casual style make them ideal for hiking, travel, and everyday use – the updated design strikes a balance between technical and casual aesthetics, making them suitable for both trail and town.

While not the lightest or most stretchable hiking shorts, their longevity and versatility set them apart. The main considerations are ensuring a good fit due to the non-adjustable waistband and being aware of the snap closure’s quirks.

Overall, they are highly recommended for anyone needing reliable, all-purpose shorts for active lifestyles. It remains one of our favorite travel shorts – the eight pockets work wonders especially with four secured (with two hidden) zippered or Velcro pockets.

With one of the drop in phone pockets (3D one on the right), I’ve been using it to carry my PATH water bottle with Liquid I.V electrolytes for travel in hot and humid places. The PATH refillable & recyclable bottle is non-insulated but super light (empty 20.3 FL. OZ. size weighs 2.5 ounces)!

Available in various colorways and inseam lengths in Short or Cargo versions.
