I Survived Hot & Humid Weather in Asia with Liquid I.V. Hydration Multiplier

Posted on January 6, 2025January 6, 2025

Our last 2024 project was a short trip to Asia, hitting three countries (Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Singapore) with hot and humid weather. So, we know we had to plan our hydration strategies ahead of time – light water bottle, electrolytes, Merino wool apparel, comfortable walking shoes.

As for electrolytes, we last tested the GU Energy Brew endurance hydration over a decade ago. This time, we went with the latest hydration multiplier from Liquid I.V., highly recommended by jet setters and Asian travelers.

Project Asia 2024

  • Hong Kong (70-80℉, 65% humidity)
  • Malaysia & Singapore (80-90℉, 75-85% humidity)

Travel Essentials

  • Kleen Kanteen 27 oz Wide Water Bottle with Loop Cap
  • Path 20 oz Aluminum bottle (refillable & recyclable)
  • Liquid I.V. Hydration Multiplier Electrolyte Powder Drink Mix
  • Ridge Merino products – Journey Polo, Tencel Tee Eastside Print, and Boxer Briefs 2.0
  • Altra Escalante 4 SW (Smartwool Limited Edition)

The Liquid I.V. Hydration Multiplier is a powdered electrolyte drink mix designed to deliver hydration more effectively than water alone, using a process called Cellular Transport Technology (CTT). This product has gained popularity among athletes, travelers, and those seeking enhanced hydration.

Product Overview

  • Format: Single-serving powder sticks
  • Flavors: Wide variety (over 16), including Lemon Lime, Strawberry, Watermelon, and Passion Fruit
  • Price: Approximately $24.99 for a pack of 16 sticks at Liquid I.V. online and Amazon (varies depending on retailer – we found Costco to have the lowest prices)
  • Key Ingredients: Sodium, potassium, glucose, Vitamin C, and B vitamins
  • Main Selling Point: Hydrate 2-3 times faster and more efficiently than water.

Key Features

Cellular Transport Technology (CTT)

Liquid I.V. uses a specific ratio of sodium, glucose, and potassium to enhance water absorption in the body. The science behind this mechanism mirrors the oral rehydration solutions recommended by the World Health Organization for medical purposes.

Nutritional Value

  • Calories: 45 per serving
  • Sodium: 510 mg (22% of the daily value)
  • Potassium: 370-380 mg (8% of the daily value)
  • Sugar: 11g from non-GMO sugar cane
  • Includes Vitamin C (117% daily value) and B vitamins (B3, B5, B6, B12).

Packaging

  • Compact and portable sticks are convenient for on-the-go hydration.
  • Each stick mixed with 16 oz of water – I added mine to about 20-25 oz of water.

Pros

Effective Hydration

You will notice improvements in hydration, especially during strenuous activities like exercise, hiking, or after illness. The electrolyte balance seems well-suited for maintaining optimal hydration levels.

Taste

The wide selection caters to varied palates, with most flavors receiving high praise for their refreshing taste. Lemon Lime and Passion Fruit are particularly popular. I loved all the flavors much more than those offered by Gatorade.

Convenient Design

The powder sticks are lightweight and easy to carry, making them ideal for travel, outdoor activities, or emergency hydration needs.

Added Vitamins

The inclusion of Vitamin C and B vitamins adds an immune-boosting and energy-supporting component, making this more than just an electrolyte solution.

Non-GMO and Gluten-Free

The product is non-GMO, gluten-free, soy-free, and dairy-free, catering to various dietary restrictions.

Cons

High Sodium Content

With 510 mg of sodium per serving, this product may not be suitable for individuals with hypertension or those on a low-sodium diet.

Sugar Content

Each stick contains 11g of sugar, which is higher than some competing electrolyte drinks. While sugar is a key component of CTT, it may be a drawback for those monitoring their sugar intake.

Price

At about $1.50 per stick (less than $1 from Costco), Liquid I.V. is more expensive than some other electrolyte products. Budget-conscious consumers might find this a limitation. But I argue that you can skip your daily cup of coffee instead.

Potential for Overuse

Because it is so effective at hydrating, you may use it excessively, potentially leading to an electrolyte imbalance if consumed too frequently without medical advice.

Performance Testing

The real test on my Asia trip – 17 days in 3 hot & humid countries.

Long Haul Travel

Flights were between 12 to 16 hours and staying hydrated with Liquid I.V. is a bonus even though it is cool inside the plane and water is readily available in flight.

Exploring by Foot & Public Transportation

Even though I may shower twice a day (to cool down and rest) while actively exploring for 12 hours (2 six-hour trips) each day, staying hydrated is crucial and without Liquid I.V., I would not have been up to it. Over 100 miles walked and many more by car (Grab ride sharing), trains, buses, and trams…

Illness Recovery

Fortunately, I did not get ill on this trip but on previous trips, I would rely on electrolytes (Gatorade) particularly with dehydration caused by stomach bugs or fever. The rapid rehydration properties are well-suited for these situations.

Ideal Uses

  • Athletes: To replace electrolytes lost during intense physical activity.
  • Travelers: For preventing dehydration during flights or in hot & humid weather.
  • Outdoor Enthusiasts: Ideal for hiking, camping, and other outdoor adventures.
  • Illness Recovery: Effective during sickness, especially with dehydration-related conditions.

Conclusion

The Liquid I.V. Hydration Multiplier is a highly effective and convenient product for rapid hydration. Its science-backed formulation and versatility make it an excellent choice for athletes, travelers, and anyone needing a hydration boost.

I can honestly say that my trip to Asia would have been miserable and less productive without Liquid I.V. hydration multiplier electrolytes! Now I swear by it and recommend it to all my readers, newsletter subscribers, friends, and family.

However, the high sodium and sugar content may not suit everyone, and its price point may deter some buyers although it’s still cheaper than your daily cup of coffee.

  • Best For: Hydration emergencies, travel, and physical exertion.
  • Not Ideal For: Low-sodium or low-sugar diets.
