Travelling with The North Face Apex Flex GTX, Motus Tights III, and S/S Pursuit Shirt

Perfect timing to take some of The North Face (TNF) Lifestyle pieces on the road for a short trip to Las Vegas. In this review, we wear tested the women’s Apex Flex GTX Jacket, MOTUS III Tights, and the men’s Short Sleeve PURSUIT Shirt. Variable weather – cloudy, rain, and a mix of sunshine…

The North Face Apex Flex GTX Jacket (Women)

Take on any mission with a chance of showers with this new, ultra-soft, impossibly dry jacket engineered with Gore-Tex. Pairing a stretch-woven exterior for extra mobility with an ultra-soft knit interior to keep you warm and comfortable, this totally waterproof TNF Apex Flex GTX rain jacket doesn’t feel or sound like an average rain shell. Designed for ultimate versatility in unpredictable conditions, an adjustable hood and pit-zip vents allow added ventilation in warmer weather.

To keep water out, the hand pockets are covered in addition to the forearm pocket (it also has infusion detail for durability). The cuffs are adjustable and there is a cinch cord hem at the front (but stops short of being able to cinch the back – there is a drop tail hem for added coverage though).

Even though the cut is Active Fit, there is ample space and not as slim fitting. Also, the sleeves are an inch or more too long for my wear tester. The TNF Apex Flex GTX rain jacket kept my wear tester dry in the heavy rain (my Cotopaxi Tikal Active Shell is not warm enough) and warm in the cold and strong winds. Slightly heavier than other rain coats but the quality of construction and three-layer Gore-Tex technology is superior.

The North Face MOTUS Tights III (Women)

Stay warm without overheating in these breathable, moisture-wicking tights crafted from stretch FlashDry fabric for unrestricted range of motion whether you’re running uneven terrain or beach side boardwalks. The TNF MOTUS III Tights are also reflective (trim and logo) and lightweight – maximize your visibility in low light for improved safety.

FlashDry fabrics are engineered to accelerate the removal of moisture from the skin and speed up evaporative drying.  FlashDry enables you to stay drier, more comfortable and out performing longer in a wide range of weather conditions and environments. FlashDry doesn’t add weight or bulk and never washes or wears out.

Leggings and tights are the most comfortable pants of choice by most women including my female wear tester. Naturally, my wear tester wore them on the flight to Vegas. But check with your airlines if you are travelling on buddy or employee passes (discounted) with the United Airlines headlines. The TNF Motus III Tights feature a wide elastic waistband for comfort and support in addition to a secure-zip, media-compatible back pocket for your smartphone.

The MOTUS III Tights are not just for workouts but a natural travel companion – comfortable, cool, and fully stretchable. The only nit is that they are a little too long (2+ inches) for a size Small. The Black colorway is preferred by my wear tester (semi-casual) and less likely to raise eyebrows on the airplane! Available in Black and many flashy colorways.

The North Face Short-Sleeve PURSUIT Shirt (Men)

Stay cool while crossing borders in this lightweight, short-sleeve button-down featuring a hidden, Velcro-close pocket that lets you keep your passport and plane tickets close at hand.

The TNF PURSUIT Short Sleeve shirt features a single front chest pocket. But under that pocket is a hidden internal passport pocket with a Velcro closure. Breathes well and the side seam gussets allows for a great range of motion – non-restrictive. Easily worn over a T-shirt (I wore the TNF Ma Reaxion Tee).

To make the PURSUIT shirt even better (for me at least), here are my recommendations (TNF does have many different short-sleeve shirts in many different designs):

  • Slim Fit
  • Shorter length as this is mostly worn untucked
  • More secured zippered pockets
  • Offer a Nylon fabric version or with more Polyester in Cotton blend
