The Bike Rack That’ll Make You Say ‘Thule-y Amazing’

Posted on July 25, 2024July 25, 2024

For more than 75 years, Thule (based in Sweden) has been creating solutions to simplify life’s adventures by committing to developing smart, stylish products that are environmentally sound, high quality, safe, and easy to use. All so you can bring the things you care most about.

The Thule Apex XT 4-bike hitch bike rack is a high-quality, versatile bike carrier designed to transport up to four bicycles securely. There is also a two-bike (Apex XT 2) and 5-bike (Apex XT 5) version.

Capacity & Compatibility

The Thule Apex XT 4 can carry up to four bikes with a maximum load capacity of 150 lbs., allowing for about 37.5 lbs. per bike. It is compatible with both 1.25″ and 2″ hitch receivers, making it suitable for a wide range of vehicles.

Design & Construction

This rack is well-built and durable, made of sturdy steel that can withstand regular use. It is lightweight at 35 lbs., making it easier to install and remove compared to some heavier platform-style racks.

Bike Spacing & Security

One of the standout features of the Apex XT 4 is the generous 7″ spacing between bikes. This extra space makes loading and unloading bikes much easier and reduces the risk of bikes bumping into each other during transport.

When loading multiple bikes, make sure you alternate direction (handles facing opposite ends), starting with the first bike (closest to vehicle) facing towards the right – minimizing handlebar and pedal interference.

Continue loading additional bikes in alternating directions to ensure a good fit and balance.

The rack uses anti-sway cradles and ratcheting straps to secure the bikes. These cradles help prevent bike-to-bike contact – folded away when not in use. The ratcheting straps are narrow and pliable, making them easy to use and less likely to get in the way during loading.

Ease of Use

Installation is tool-free, thanks to Thule’s innovative design. The rack simply slides into the hitch receiver and locks it in place, eliminating the need and potential loss for a separate hitch pin.

The generous bike spacing significantly reduces the likelihood of handlebars, pedals, and other bike parts interfering with each other, making it easier to load and unload bikes without them getting tangled or stuck.

The Apex XT 4 also features a tilt-down function, allowing easy access to the vehicle’s rear. Fold the bike arms down when not in use, reducing the rack’s profile.

Bike Compatibility

This rack can accommodate a wide range of bike sizes, including 20″ kids’ bikes and even some 16″ bikes. However, it’s worth noting that some women’s and children’s bikes may require a top tube adapter for proper fitting. This modifies women’s bike frames as well as BMX and non-standard frames in order to be carried on hanging-style hitch and strap mount bike racks.

Security Features

The Apex XT 4 comes with integrated locks for both the hitch and the bikes, providing peace of mind when leaving your vehicle unattended.

Price & Value

Priced at around $449, the Apex XT 4 offers excellent value for its quality, versatility, and ease of use – considered a mid-range option that delivers high-end performance.

Driving with the Thule Apex XT4

Designed to keep your bikes secure during transport, thanks to the anti-sway cradles and ratcheting straps. The cradles secure the bikes at multiple points, reducing the risk of bikes swaying and hitting each other or the vehicle during transit. The straps hold the bikes firmly in place, adding an extra layer of security.

The rack also includes an integrated cable lock that secures the bikes to the rack, and a locking knob that secures the rack to the vehicle.

Potential Drawbacks

Like all hanging-style racks, loading can be more challenging than with platform racks, especially for heavier bikes (my Aventon Pace 500 e-Bike is over 50 lbs. and quite a challenge). Additionally, the durability of the plastic straps may be an issue with long term use – could use additional bungee cords for extra security.

If you have parking sensors in your vehicle, the hitch mounted bike rack will likely trigger them. For my VW ID.4, I had to disable the ‘Maneuver Braking‘ and ‘Rear Traffic Alert‘ settings. Check your owner’s manual.

In A Nutshell

Overall, the Thule Apex XT 4-bike hitch rack is a well-designed, user-friendly option for families or groups needing to transport multiple bikes. Its spacious design, easy installation, and security features make it a top choice in the hanging rack category. ‘Thule-y Amazing‘!
