Some of our readers have been asking for reviews of Samuel Hubbard shoes but we never got around to it until recently. I’ve seen their ads in the print edition of the Wall Street Journal all the time and kept that in the back of my mind to take a closer look in the future. And here we are.

Bruce Katz, CEO of Samuel Hubbard, has been quoted as saying, “We make conventional shoes that look and feel great with lots of colors, and it’s getting people excited about wearing shoes again… Our shoes look good with jeans or chinos. It’s fresh… And the comfort completely sells them”. We agree. All the three models (Founder, Market Cap, 24 Seven) we have wear tested have these features:

  • Full glove-leather lining for extra comfort
  • Custom Vibram® soles
  • Lightweight Kevlar® shank
  • Triple-Density removable memory foam insole
  • Resole-able
  • Designed in Mill Valley, CA and handcrafted in Portugal

Founder

The Samuel Hubbard Founder is a classic 5 eyelet oxford designed to complement your dress slacks or tailored jeans. The genuine leather welting, the waxed laces and the refined eyelets highlight the soft leather uppers that require no breaking in. I took my brand new pair for a hilly and hour long walk with my dogs sock-less – no hot spots or blisters and ultra comfortable. I agree with Samuel Hubbard’s claim that walking in their shoes are as comfortable as my favorite running shoes – very close but if I sized it right (see Sizing section below).

The Founder also has a finished satin wax that you can also bring to a brilliant shine with your own shoe polish. It is also fully lined with cowhide glove leather and they don’t use any glue between the uppers and the linings so that the shoe breathes naturally and also conform to your foot.

Notice the lack of a sizeable heel – you’ll get an almost zero drop feel. Shoe weigh in around 15.2 ounces – average weight.

Market Cap

The Samuel Hubbard Market Cap is a favorite in their Go to Work Collection as it works well with both dress slacks and blue jeans. But I like it best when worn with a business suit or slim dress pants. Like the Founder, it is also built on the Vibram sole with your foot cradled inside the shoe by a full-length memory foam footbed, It is also covered in vegetable-tanned leather – the healthiest material for your feet to stand on.

The smart cap toe design is distinguished by very fine broguing. These shoes are perfect for long days on your feet or when your work requires you to move around a great deal during the day, 9 to 5 or more. Shoe weigh in around 15.2 ounces – average weight.

The Market Cap earned the Samuel Hubbard tagline, “its mother was a sneaker, its father was a dress shoe.” Very accurate indeed.

24 Seven

The Samuel Hubbard 24 Seven is an all-day boot that is a beautiful addition to your wardrobe. Wear them on your travels, running errands, or just  around town.

The lightweight Vibram sole and memory foam insole provides the bounce and comfort of a sneaker. From heel to toe, the 24 Seven is lined in soft, glove leather cowhide that feels like satin while keeping your feet comfortably cool.

Available in Black and Whiskey, these will quickly become your go-to boots.

Sizing

The shoes runs true to size but I followed the Samuel Hubbard size guide since I have wide feet and downloaded the Foot Measuring Tool. Based on the printout, I should have ample width space but probably should have chosen a Wide instead of Medium width as with socks, it is snug. So we recommend a Wide width (if available) or size up by a half size if you have 2E+ feet.

All the models are now available and in stock at Samuel Hubbard online or at your local shoe store – in many colorways. The Samuel Hubbard shoes are the only non-minimalist dress shoes that are truly comfortable, elegant, and stylish. You now have another alternative to people calling your minimalist dress shoes ‘clown shoes’…

Make your Hubbards new again.

Samuel Hubbard shoes are built to last and they have created a resole program so you never have to part with your favorite pair for more than a few weeks. For  $75 your shoes will be resoled and cleaned and the laces will be replaced. Good as new.
