Altra Running has officially launched the Experience 3 Collection, continuing the brand’s push into the “low-drop” (4mm) category rather than their traditional zero-drop. The collection centers on a philosophy of “natural foot positioning” combined with a rocker geometry for a smoother ride.
Altra Experience Flow 3 (Road)
The Experience Flow 3 is the neutral daily trainer of the group. While it keeps the same EGO™ P35 midsole foam from the previous version, Altra has refined several key comfort areas:
- Engineered Mono Mesh Upper: A new, softer one-piece mesh that is more breathable and uses roughly 63% recycled materials.
- Redesigned Heel Collar: The “elf heel” flare from version 2 has been removed in favor of a more traditional, plush padded collar to improve Achilles comfort and lockdown.
- Increased Volume: The fit is slightly more accommodating, with a bit more depth and width in the midfoot compared to version 2.
- Outsole Durability: It features expanded rubber coverage in high-wear areas (medial heel and lateral midfoot) to extend the life of the shoe.
Altra Experience Wild 3 & 3+ (Trail)
The Experience Wild 3 is the trail-specific counterpart, designed for agility on dirt and light technical terrain.
- New Midsole Foam: Both trail models now utilize a specifically tuned EGO™ P35 foam, which is lighter and more responsive than the previous version’s EVA blend.
- Improved Stability: Altra redesigned the footbed construction, so your foot sits deeper “into” the shoe rather than on top of it, addressing the stability issues/ankle rolling noted in the Experience Wild 2.
- Rocker Geometry: A moderate toe-spring helps with transitions, making it a versatile “road-to-trail” option.
Experience Wild 3 vs. Wild 3+ : The Key Differences
The “Plus” (+) model is the more rugged, technical sibling. If you are running groomed paths, the Experience Wild 3 is enough; if you are hitting mud, wet rock, or steep inclines, the Experience Wild 3+ is the upgrade.
| Feature | Experience Wild 3 | Experience Wild 3+ |
| Outsole | MaxTrac™ (Altra’s standard sticky rubber) | Vibram® Megagrip (Premium grip for wet/dry) |
| Traction Tech | Standard lugs | Traction Lug technology for increased surface area |
| Protection | Standard mesh upper | Integrated Toe Bumper for rock protection |
| Best For | Light trails / Road-to-trail | Technical trails / Demanding environments |
| MSRP | $150 | $165 |
Stack Height & Weight Comparison
For 2026, Altra has unified the stack heights across the Experience 3 collection to provide a consistent underfoot feel regardless of whether you are on the road or the trail.
All models in this collection share a 4mm drop and the same stack height profile, though the trail versions are significantly heavier due to their rugged outsoles and protective upper materials.
| Model | Heel Stack | Forefoot Stack | Weight (Men’s US 9) | Weight (Women’s US 8) |
| Experience Flow 3 | 32mm | 28mm | 9.0 oz (255g) | 7.5 oz (212g) |
| Experience Wild 3 | 32mm | 28mm | 11.1 oz (315g) | 9.1 oz (258g) |
| Experience Wild 3+ | 32mm | 28mm | 11.4 oz (323g) | 9.3 oz (263g) |
Observations
- Weight Penalty for the “Plus”: The Wild 3+ is roughly 0.3 oz (8g) heavier than the standard Wild 3. This extra weight comes almost entirely from the Vibram® Megagrip rubber and the added Traction Lugs, which are denser and more durable than Altra’s proprietary MaxTrac™ rubber used on the base model.
- The “Illusion” of Height: You may feel that the Wild 3 sits “lower” than the Flow 3. This is because the Wild 3 features deeper midsole sidewalls – your foot actually sits inside a “cradle” of foam for stability on uneven terrain, whereas in the Flow 3, you sit more on top of the platform.
- Consistency: By keeping the 32mm/28mm stack across the board, Altra makes it very easy to swap between your road trainer (Flow) and your trail shoe (Wild) without your calves needing to adjust to a different geometry.
The Experience 3 Collection Colorways
