In the world of minimalist footwear, LEMs Shoes has carved out a strong reputation for combining foot-healthy design with everyday wearability. Their latest, the Zen Clog, a slip-on addition to their popular Primal line, promises effortless comfort and a natural fit. But does this simple clog deliver a truly “Zen” experience? We put it to the test to find out.
Key Features and Minimalist Philosophy
The LEMs Shoes Zen Clog is built on the foundation of what barefoot shoe enthusiasts love about the brand: promoting natural foot function.
- Zero-Drop Platform: Like all true minimalist footwear, the Zen Clog maintains a zero-drop heel, meaning your heel and forefoot are level. This promotes a more natural gait, better posture, and strengthens the foot’s muscles by mimicking a barefoot position.
- Wide Toe Box (Natural-Shape™ Fit): This is arguably the most critical feature. The anatomical shape of the toe box allows your toes to splay out naturally, preventing the compression often found in conventional shoes and contributing to overall foot health.
- Flexible Outsole: Built on the tried-and-true Primal Zen outsole, the clog features an Injection Blown Rubber (IBR) sole. This material provides an exceptional combination of lightweight flexibility and enough cushioning (with a total stack height of 11mm to ease the transition for those new to minimalist shoes.
- Soft Suede Upper: The upper is crafted from soft suede, offering a cozy and comfortable feel. The slip-on design is enhanced by a slightly snug upper to help keep the shoe on your foot without the need to “toe scrunch” (a common issue with backless slip-ons).
- Removable Cork Insole: The clog comes with a minimal cork-topped insole for an initial layer of cushion and moisture-wicking properties. This is easily removable for those who prefer an even more grounded, barefoot feel.
Performance and Wear Experience
The Zen Clog is designed for comfort, convenience, and casual wear – and it excels in those areas.
Comfort & Convenience
The primary appeal of the clog is its effortless slip-on/slip-off convenience. They are excellent for keeping by the door for quick errands, dog walks, or as a dedicated house shoe – immediate comfort right out of the box, with the soft suede conforming quickly to the foot. The wide toe box eliminates pressure points, making them a great option for individuals with wider feet or those who wear toe spacers.
Stability & Ground Feel
The Primal Zen outsole offers good stability thanks to its wider-than-average base. While it is certainly flexible and zero-drop, the stack height of 14mm (which is on the lower end for transitional shoes, but higher for pure minimalist footwear) offers a balance.
This makes the Zen Clog a fantastic choice for those transitioning away from conventional footwear, as the slight cushion offers protection while still encouraging natural movement.
Versatility & Style
As a clog, its versatility is inherently limited. It’s an ideal shoe for:
- Casual Everyday Use: Grocery runs, commuting, running errands.
- Travel: Easy on/off for airport security and comfortable for long flights.
- House Shoe/Recovery: A comfortable alternative to slippers or sandals.
However, they are not intended for high-intensity workouts, long-distance hiking, or wet/muddy conditions due to the suede upper and open-heel design. The style is casual and understated, fitting well into business casual or relaxed settings.

Final Verdict & Choice
The LEMs Shoes Zen Clog is a triumph of minimalist comfort and convenience. It successfully translates the foot-healthy principles of the Primal line into an easy, everyday slip-on. If you’re seeking a comfortable, zero-drop shoe for daily errands, travel, or simply wearing around the house that allows your feet to move and breathe naturally without the “toe scrunch” of a sandal, the Zen Clog is an outstanding choice. It’s a perfect transitional shoe, but also a beloved addition to the rotation of a minimalist footwear veteran.
With the colder than normal northern California weather, I’ve been wearing it daily as a house shoe for the past few weeks – freezing hardwood floors.
So how do you choose between the forementioned Primal Zen shoes?
For Ultimate Convenience: LEMs Shoes Zen Clog
The Zen Clog is the easiest to get on and off, making it ideal if you need a grab-and-go shoe or a dedicated indoor shoe that still promotes healthy foot mechanics. It offers a slightly softer feel than the original Primal models, but you trade the security of a full heel for the ease of a slip-on.
For the Most Minimalist Feel: LEMs Shoes Drifter
The Drifter (Canvas version) is the closest to a traditional barefoot shoe in terms of stack height, offering the best ground feel and maximum flexibility at 10mm. Its convertible heel is a key feature, allowing it to function as a secured slip-on or a backless slipper.
For All-Day Security and Cushion: LEMs Shoes Primal Zen Suede
The Primal Zen Suede is the most versatile daily driver. Since it is a lace-up sneaker, it provides the most secure fit for longer walks or more active days. The outsole is slightly wider and offers more inherent protection/cushioning at a 14mm stack height (with the insole), making it an excellent choice for those new to minimalist footwear.
Better yet, have all three LEMs Shoes models in your rotation! At minimum, the Zen Clog and Primal Zen Sude should cover all your activities from recovery to business casual to travel.
The Zen Clog is available now in two colorways: Chocolate, Latte.
