The Daily Trainer That Nails Comfort, Bounce, and a Natural Fit—Is This the Ultimate Transition Shoe?

Posted on July 6, 2025July 6, 2025

Altra Experience Flow 2 is Altra’s latest daily road trainer, designed to broaden the brand’s appeal with a 4mm drop, energetic new midsole, and signature wide toe box. The target audience are runners seeking a transitioning minimalist shoe or a comfortable, versatile, and stable shoe for daily miles, while still offering Altra’s natural foot-shaped fit.

We just tested the Altra Experience Wild 2, the trail version of the Experience Flow 2 just a few weeks ago. And we were delightfully surprised and loved Altra Experience Wild 2.

What’s New in Version 2

  • All-new Altra EGO™ P35 midsole foam, for a light and efficient feel
  • Updated heel fit, designed to improve comfort.
  • Re-designed upper with engineered mesh, made to improve breathability.

Key Features

  • Weight: ~8.0 oz (US M 8.5)
  • Stack Height: 32mm heel / 28mm forefoot (4mm drop)
  • Midsole: EGO P35 foam—softer and bouncier than previous versions
  • Upper: Breathable sandwich mesh with secure midfoot and wide toe box
  • Outsole: Durable rubber with good grip for road and light gravel
  • Fit: True to size for most, but some may prefer to size up if between sizes

Performance & Ride

  • Cushioning: The EGO P35 foam offers a noticeable improvement in softness and bounce over the previous model, delivering a ride that’s more energetic and forgiving, especially for daily training and longer runs.
  • Responsiveness: While the shoe feels lively at easy and moderate paces, it lacks snappy toe-off and high energy return for faster workouts or racing—making it better for daily miles than speedwork.
  • Stability: The moderate stack, broad platform, and robust sidewalls provide excellent inherent stability, even for mild support needs, without feeling clunky.
  • Flexibility & Rocker: The shoe is flexible with a gentle rocker, encouraging a smooth transition and supporting a midfoot strike.

Speedwork versus Sprinting (with Experience Flow 2)

In terms of responsiveness, I personally would run a 400m or 800m on the rubber track with it. I wear spikes for the 100m, 200m, 400m, and 800mm when I really want to race but the Escalante Racer 2 and Experience Flow 2 will do just as well in my experience.

I reviewed the Altra cross-country spikes, Golden Spike, back in 2016 – the only spike with a wide toe box. No longer available but I’m happy to have a pair for all track racing when I needed spikes (along with my New Balance specialty spikes).

Comfort & Fit

  • Upper: The mesh upper is breathable, comfortable, and locks down well through the midfoot while allowing toes to splay naturally. The fit is generous in the forefoot, ideal for wide feet, but the midfoot may feel snug for high-volume feet.
  • Sizing: It felt snug when I first slipped on the shoe but once I adjusted the laces, the fit is perfect.
  • Insole & Padding: The insole is adequately cushioned, and the padding around the heel and tongue is comfortable without bulk. The flared heel counter provides support and stability for your heel and ankle.

Durability & Grip

  • Outsole: The rubber outsole is durable and offers reliable grip on pavement and light gravel, performing well in both dry and wet conditions.
  • Upper & Toe box: The upper and toe box are durable, with good resistance to extended wear.

Altra EGO™ P35 Midsole Foam

The new EGO P35 foam in the Altra Experience Flow 2 significantly improves both comfort and bounce by using a softer, lower-durometer compound (Shore A 35) that delivers a more cushioned and energetic ride compared to previous versions.

This foam is lightweight, helping the shoe feel less bulky, and provides a noticeable increase in underfoot softness and responsiveness, making daily miles feel smoother and more enjoyable. The P35’s polyolefin elastomer blend gives the midsole a rubbery, bouncy quality, adding a lively sensation with each step without becoming mushy or overly soft.

Overall, you will experience a lighter, more cushioned, and more dynamic ride that enhances comfort and adds a fun, energetic feel to everyday training. I also use it for walking and rucking – a perfect cross trainer!

Flow 2 Updated Heel Design

Heel Counter

The Altra Experience Flow 2 introduces a redesigned heel counter and heel fit that marks a significant improvement over the previous version. The new heel counter is firmer and more structured, moving away from the internal heel pillows found in the original model. This design provides better support and stability for the heel and ankle, helping to restrict excessive movement and reduce the risk of irritation or blisters, particularly around the Achilles tendon.

The heel collar is moderately padded and features a flared design, which not only adds comfort but also prevents unwanted rubbing and enhances the overall fit for different foot shapes. This updated heel construction ensures a smoother, more secure lockdown, addressing previous complaints of heel slippage in the original Flow. The result is a rearfoot fit that feels supportive and comfortable, making the shoe suitable for both running and walking, and especially beneficial for those who value a stable, irritation-free heel environment.

The Experience Flow 2’s heel upgrades—a firmer, flared counter and cleaner collar—work in harmony to provide a secure, comfortable, and stable heel fit. Whether your heel is narrow or your stride varied, this refined fit helps build confidence and reduces irritation mile after mile.

Heel Tab

When I first saw the height of the new curved/flared heel tab design, I was scared that my Achilles would get hot spots. It also reminded me of the Skechers slip-ons walking shoes advertised on TV. But to my surprise, the innovative design makes it easy to get the shoes on-off and it is super comfortable without any rubbing at all.

The heel tab area has moderate foam padding that cushions the Achilles without feeling bulky or intrusive. The sleek heel tab profile avoids catching on your pants or socks. The flared shape reduces Achilles irritation and chafing.

The heel tab on the Experience Flow 2 is designed for subtle function: flared enough to reduce Achilles pressure and help with on/off transitions, but integrated into the collar for a clean, comfortable fit. It’s part of a broader redesign that prioritizes stability, comfort, and simplicity—a thoughtful update that complements the shoe’s versatile daily-trainer identity.

Who Is The Altra Experience Flow 2 Made For?

  • Runners seeking a low-drop, stable, and comfortable daily trainer.
  • Fans of Altra’s foot-shaped fit who want a bit more drop for Achilles relief.
  • Anyone wanting a versatile shoe for daily runs, walking, or travel.
  • A road runner looking for a lightweight, performance-focused shoe.
  • Long training runs without tired and achy feet with an effortless stride.

Final Verdict

The Altra Experience Flow 2 is a standout daily trainer for those seeking a natural fit, moderate cushioning, and a stable ride with a touch of bounce. It’s not a speed shoe (at least not for sprinting but works well for speed work in my opinion), but it’s a reliable, comfortable option for most daily running needs.

The Altra Experience Flow 2 is now available in various colorways for both men and women at Altra Running and REI.com.
