Get Wild Out There With The New Altra Experience Wild 2

Posted on June 24, 2025July 3, 2025

The Altra Experience Wild 2 is the latest iteration of Altra’s popular trail running shoe, designed to bridge the gap between traditional running shoes and Altra’s signature zero-drop models. With a 4mm heel-to-toe drop, a roomy foot-shaped toe box, and a blend of comfort, protection, and versatility, the Experience Wild 2 aims to appeal to a wide range of trail runners—from seasoned ultrarunners to those just venturing off the roads.

Key Technical Specs

  • Weight: 10.4 oz (Men’s), 8.8 oz (Women’s)
  • Stack Height: 28mm/32mm (Men’s), 26mm/30mm (Women’s)

  • Upper: Mesh
  • Midsole: Lightweight compression-molded EVA foam
  • Outsole: MaxTrac rubber with 3.5mm lugs
  • FootShape: Standard
  • Price: $140

What’s New In Version 2

  • Updated mesh upper to help increase breathability.
  • Integrated GaiterTrap™ detail for easy attachment.
  • New lacing eyelet, designed for an improved fit.
  • Increased TPU overlay to help enhance toe protection coverage and durability.

Comfort and Fit

Roomy Toe Box & Secure Fit

Altra Experience Wild 2 continues Altra’s tradition of a wide, anatomical toe box, providing ample space for toe splay and reducing the risk of black toenails or cramped toes. The updated upper features a slightly shallow toe box for a more locked-in feel.

Upper Construction

The new mesh upper is lighter and more breathable than the previous version, helping to keep feet cooler on long runs. Overlays across the toe box and heel add structure and protection, and a new integrated D-ring makes gaiter attachment easier and more streamlined.

Heel and Midfoot

The heel counter and tongue are moderately padded, contributing to a plush, secure fit. The addition of an extra eyelet allows for improved lacing security, especially on technical descents.

Ride and Performance

Cushioning & Responsiveness

The Altra Experience Wild 2 features a compression-molded EVA midsole that strikes a balance between cushioning and ground feel. The 4mm drop makes it an ideal transition shoe for those moving from higher-drop models but not ready for zero drop.

Outsole & Traction

The MaxTrac outsole with 3.5mm lugs offers solid grip on most dry and loose surfaces, excelling on moderate trails, gravel, and fire roads. The “stickiness” of the rubber inspires confidence on rocky descents and switchbacks. However, the shoe is less effective in deep mud or on wet, slick rocks, where premium outsoles like Vibram MegaGrip (like in the Lone Peak 9+) outperform it.

Protection

The updated toe bumper provides more protection against rocks and roots, but the shoe still leans toward a softer, more flexible feel rather than being heavily armored.

Durability and Versatility

Durability

The upper’s new mesh and overlays contributes to a longer-lasting fit and appearance.

Versatility

The Altra Experience Wild 2 shines as a do-it-all trail shoe – comfortable enough for daily training, long enough for ultras, and nimble enough for faster efforts. It’s also suitable for road-to-trail transitions and light hiking, making it a strong option for runners who want one shoe for multiple uses.

Altra Rocker Technology

We covered the Altra Rocker Geometry in our post, The Altra Experience 4mm Drop Shoe Collection. Rocker geometry refers to a slightly curved sole shape that helps guide your foot through the gait cycle, from heel strike to toe-off, with less effort. It is all about making running easier on your body—with smoother movement, less impact, and better form guidance.

Surprisingly, the rocker shape geometry did not bother me at all (you won’t even notice it at all) – compared to other brands like Skechers (GORUN Razor 5, 4mm drop) which hurt my arch immediately just walking in them while also too narrow in the toe box…

The integration of the rocker technology into the EVA-based compression molded foam is seamless in my opinion – feels natural in the Experience collection.

I cannot say that for various other brands! I hesitate when it comes to testing shoes with rocker-like technology – I prefer natural running form (neutral support) rather than running shoes that ‘forces’ your gait. The Altra Experience Wild 2 is natural.

Who Is The Altra Experience Wild 2 Made For?

Altra Experience Wild 2 is great for:

  • Runners who want Altra’s foot-shaped comfort but aren’t ready for zero drop.
  • Road runners transitioning to trails.
  • Hikers or trail runners seeking a do-it-all shoe for moderate terrain.
  • Those who enjoy a rocker-style, smooth-rolling ride.

Final Verdict

Based on testing over 300 models of minimalist shoes since 2010 and wearing exclusively only zero drop shoes in all categories (road, trail, business casual, dress), I can conclude that in terms of moderate cushioning, the magic number might be a stack height between 26mm and 28mm. This would include the following Altra models: Experience Wild 2, Experience Flow 2, and Lone Peak 9.

Once transitioned, my preferred stack height is between 21mm and 24mm. This would include the following Altra models: Escalante Racer 2, Escalante 4, and Superior 7.

Higher stack heights can result in too much cushioning (long-term resulting in muscle atrophy) or risking ankle injuries (twisting or spraining) especially running in trails. A lot of people swear by their maximalist shoes like Hoka or Altra Olympus – it’s personal.

The Altra Experience Wild 2 is an awesome transitioning shoe and will be incorporated into our Transitioning to Minimalist Shoes Guide in the next edition now that it is available publicly. The same goes for the Altra Experience Flow 2 – I expect the same performance for road running instead of trail running (and rucking – see below). The Altra Experience Flow 2 is next on our review calendar.

One unexpected outcome of testing the Experience Wild 2 is that it has become my rucking shoe of choice. It has just the right amount of cushioning and superior grip when rucking on rolling hills in various terrains (asphalt, concrete, gravel, and trails). See Cross Training with GORUCK for Runners.

Available in many colorful colorways for both Men and Women.
