After over a decade, we’re back with Smartwool’s latest offerings. Previous WTGR reviews:

go far. feel good.

A few selections from Smartwool Fall ’24 collection starting with the Active Fleece 1/2 Zip. Designed for comfort, warmth, and versatility, the Smartwool Active Fleece 1/2 Zip is a solid choice for anyone looking to stay warm without sacrificing mobility or breathability.

Material & Warmth

  • The fleece is a blend of merino wool and recycled polyester, which makes it not only warm but also eco-friendly. Merino wool’s natural temperature-regulating and moisture-wicking properties means that you stay warm without overheating, and it’s effective at pulling sweat away from your skin. Main Body: 47% Polyester, 38% Merino Wool, 15% Elastane. Pockets: 100% Polyester.
  • While it’s warm, it’s also designed to be lightweight. This balance of warmth and weight is ideal for outdoor activities, where you don’t want to feel bogged down.

Fit & Comfort

  • It’s cut in a way that allows you to layer under or over it without feeling restricted. There’s enough stretch in the fabric to move comfortably without feeling too tight or loose.
  • The inner fabric is soft against the skin, avoiding any itchiness you might expect from wool products. Smartwool has improved on this front over the years, and this piece is no exception.

Practical Design

  • The half-zip allows you to adjust for temperature control, letting in air when you’re warm and keeping it zipped up when you need to retain heat.
  • This fleece includes thumbholes, a favorite among outdoor enthusiasts. They keep your sleeves in place and provide a little extra hand coverage in cold weather.
  • There’s a subtle zip pocket on the side for small items like keys or a card, which is handy but unobtrusive.

Breathability & Moisture Control

  • Designed to allow airflow, the fabric prevents any sticky or clammy feeling you get after a workout. Merino wool’s moisture-wicking quality keeps you dry, which helps you regulate your temperature better and cuts down on odor.

Durability & Care

  • While soft and comfortable, the fleece is tough enough to manage regular outdoor wear. The recycled polyester adds to the durability, which helps it withstand washing and wear.
  • Like the Intraknit Merino Fleece Crew, it lasts long, but you must follow their washing instructions as Merino wool tends to shrink if not washed correctly.

How To Wear It

  • It works well as a base or mid-layer, making it flexible across seasons.
  • It is ideal for hiking, running, or even casual wear in colder months, thanks to its warmth and mobility.

Recommendations

The Smartwool Active Fleece 1/2 Zip is a reliable choice if you’re looking for a comfortable, warm layer that performs well across various activities. The eco-friendly fabric and design details, like the half-zip and thumbholes, make it practical and stylish. Whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast or just need a good fleece for day-to-day wear, this piece strikes a great balance between function and comfort.

Available in three colorways: Evergreen, Twilight Blue, Black.
