Conquer Every Summit: SOAR x Altra Trail Running Gear Review

Posted on August 15, 2025August 15, 2025

The SOAR X Altra collection sets a new benchmark in premium, high-performance trail running apparel. Designed for elite athletes and serious enthusiasts, these products blend British craftsmanship, American trail innovation, and cutting-edge materials—all wrapped in a vibrant “Prism” colorway that’s both functional and attention-grabbing.

We hit the trails with this exclusive collaboration between SOAR Running and Altra, and here’s what we found.

Quick Take: Why Trail Runners Love This Collab

SOAR x Altra Trail Race Top

Key Features

  • Multi-Fabric Construction
    • Shoulders, upper arms, and center back: UPF 50, abrasion-resistant panels for pack compatibility.
    • Underarms and lower front: Open mesh for maximum airflow.
    • Lower chest: Slightly denser mesh for balance.
  • Performance
    • Featherlight actively cools the body and dries rapidly—even when drenched in sweat.
    • Ultra-breathable, never feels clammy in high heat or humidity.
    • Cut with “race fit” in mind—comfortable for rigorous movement and layering.

✅ Pros

  • Weightless feel: Feels like a second skin, thanks to featherweight Italian mesh.
  • Strategic ventilation: Bonded seams and open-weave panels offer maximum airflow.
  • Zero-chafe design: No side seams or labels to rub during long efforts.
  • Standout style: Altra-branded print with high-contrast color blocking.

❌ Cons

  • Limited insulation: Best for hot-weather or high-intensity efforts.
  • Slim fit: May feel snug if you prefer relaxed silhouettes – fortunately, I love athletic fit for all my running apparel and especially European brands.

Our Verdict

Ideal for racing or intense training, the Trail Race Top keeps you cool when you’re grinding vertically or pushing pace on sun-exposed ridgelines. It’s built for speed, breathability, and frictionless movement.

SOAR x Altra Printed Run Cap

Key Features

  • Ultralight and Breathable Build
    • Supple fit—feels nearly weightless during use.
    • Highly effective sweat management keeps sweat out of eyes even during demanding runs.
    • Subtle yet safety-focused reflective highlights.
  • Style and Function
    • Unique Prism colorway matches the collection for distinctive trail presence.
    • Designed for all-day comfort on exposed trails.

✅ Pros

  • Wicking power: Sweat evaporates quickly during climbs and descents.
  • Adjustable comfort: Easy-fit elastic back with minimalist buckle.
  • Crushable brim: Stuff it in your pack or vest—no worries.
  • Bold trail-ready print: Designed to match the full kit.

❌ Cons

  • One-size design: Might not suit large heads – a little tighter than what I like.

Our Verdict

A perfect companion for scorching days or sunny ridge runs. Lightweight, breathable, and built to pack away when clouds roll in.

SOAR x Altra Trail Race Shorts

Key Features

  • Technical Innovation: RHEON Technology
    • Features strips of RHEON—NASA-inspired super polymer—strategically placed for muscle vibration reduction and impact absorption. The material stiffens under force, absorbing shock, then instantly relaxes for full freedom of movement.
  • Storage Mastery
    • Four integrated, secure pockets for gels, hydration, and mobile phone.
    • Rear drawcord system for quick pole/jacket attachment—innovative organization for ultra & long-distance efforts.
  • Fit
    • Close-fitting half-tight design: may feel snug for some, so consider sizing up for comfort.
    • Waistband-free for chafe resistance but highly supportive during dynamic movement.

✅ Pros

  • Laser-cut ventilation: Maximum breathability for your hardest runs.
  • Race storage system: Secure rear pocket fits gels, a key, or a phone.
  • Integrated brief: Supportive, smooth, and chafe-free.
  • Silicone grip hem: Keeps shorts locked in place on technical descents.

❌ Cons

  • Minimalist storage: One rear pocket only—may not replace a running vest.

Our Verdict

Dialed in for race day, these shorts are what you’d reach for when every ounce matters. From vertical kilometers to hot 50Ks, they deliver elite comfort without the bulk.

I’m a huge fan of compression apparel and always run or bike with compression calf sleeves – minimizes muscle injury and soreness, especially on hills. Additionally, I also use compression shorts for workout or running or biking.

Style Meets Performance: Complete the Kit

Whether you’re charging up alpine peaks or flying down forested singletrack, this kit screams premium performance with unmistakable style – Altra’s signature foot-shaped trail legacy meets SOAR’s London-born finesse.

The Prism colorway is bold, yet race-refined—making both fashion and function statement on the trails.

Sizing & Fit Recommendations

  • Consider sizing up, especially if you are in between sizes or prefer a more relaxed fit. The apparel is tailored for a European “race fit”—more streamlined than North American counterparts.
  • Shorts are snug to pull on but designed to “disappear” during active use.
  • The top is slightly more relaxed; many find the best fit by going up one size if you’re broader on the shoulders.

Should You Buy?

YES—if performance matters.

The SOAR x Altra Trail Collection isn’t just a style upgrade—it’s a serious performance weapon for trail runners pushing boundaries. While it’s not the most budget-friendly kit, it’s one of the most advanced we’ve tested for hot-weather racing and technical terrain.

Pair it with your Mont Blancs or Lone Peaks, and you’ll feel unstoppable on the mountain. My mentor and business partner from the Natural Running Center, Dr. Mark Cucuzzella has been testing the SOAR x Altra Mont Blanc Carbon on various surfaces that he runs ultras on. We will have his review here in the near future.

If you want to race light, move fast, and stand out on the trail—this collab is a new benchmark in state-of-the-art race gear.
