Why Smartwool Active Fleece Is The Only Mid-Layer You Need
We evaluated a few products from Smartwool Second Cut Project recently. In this review, we wear-test some products from Smartwool Active Fleece collection.
The main difference between Smartwool Active Fleece and the Second Cut Project lies in their material source, purpose, and circularity model. The Second Cut Project is fundamentally a circularity initiative, whereas Active Fleece is a performance fabric blend designed for high-aerobic activities.
Second Cut is about the story of the materials – they are reclaimed fibers diverted from the landfill, representing Smartwool’s deepest commitment to the circular economy.
Active Fleece is about the performance of the garment – it’s a technical blend engineered for maximum comfort, stretch, and movement during cold-weather exercise.
Every dedicated runner knows the struggle: that perfect mid-layer is an elusive myth. Standard fleece leaves you a sweaty mess 15 minutes in, cotton holds moisture like a sponge, and pure synthetics smell questionable after one session. You need warmth on the start line, breathability on the climb, and total freedom of movement – all without the bulk.
The Merits of Active Fleece – Engineered for Peak Performance
The Smartwool Active Fleece collection redefines performance wear by blending nature’s most advanced fiber (Merino Wool) with technical synthetics. This isn’t your grandfather’s heavy, static-prone fleece; it’s a lightweight, dynamic armor built for high-output activity.
The Science Behind the Viral Comfort
The core of the Active Fleece line lies in its proprietary fabric blend, engineered specifically for start-stop, high-aerobic motion:
| Feature | Runner Benefit | The “Smartwool Difference” |
| Hybrid Material | Ideal warmth-to-weight ratio. | 47% Recycled Polyester, 38% Merino Wool, 15% Elastane. |
| Merino Next-to-Skin | Ultimate anti-chafe comfort and rapid moisture-wicking. | Soft-brushed Merino is intentionally placed directly against your skin for temperature regulation and zero itch. |
| 4-Way Stretch | Unrestricted movement for full stride length. | The high Elastane content ensures maximum flexibility, moving seamlessly with your body without restriction or bagging. |
| Natural Odor Resistance | Multi-day wear without the stink. | Merino naturally traps and neutralizes odor-causing bacteria, making it perfect for multi-session training or trail runs. |
| Recycled Content | Better for the planet. | Utilizing recycled polyester fibers for the durable outer layer aligns performance with sustainability. |
The Temperature Triumph (Warmth Without the Sweat)
Merino wool is a thermoregulating miracle. When you start your cold run, the fleece structure traps warmth. As your body temperature rises (the “high aerobic” phase), the fabric actively transports moisture away from the skin and allows excess heat to dump, preventing that clammy, overheating feeling typical of pure polyester. This makes the Active Fleece the ultimate “set it and forget it” layer for temperatures ranging from 5°C to 15°C (40°F to 60°F).
Once you go Merino wool or any blend of it, you will never go back. Almost all my running, cycling, outdoors, and travel apparel are Merino wool-first. Period.
The Full Active Runner Kit
We took the key pieces in the Active Fleece line – the Full-Zip/Jacket and the Joggers – out for several long miles to test their durability, fit, and running-specific functionality.
The Active Fleece Outer Layer (Jacket / Full-Zip)
Whether you choose the Women’s Active Fleece Full Zip or the Men’s Active Fleece Jacket, you get a mid-layer designed for versatile use, from pre-run warmups to the core of your cold-weather kit.
- Running Fit & Mobility: The regular fit allows for easy layering over a base layer without feeling baggy. The 4-way stretch is immediately noticeable, especially across the shoulders and back, accommodating dynamic arm movement during a full stride.
- Essential Features:
- Secure Pockets: Two secure zippered hand pockets are deep enough for a phone, keys, or nutrition, keeping your essentials locked down.
- Thumbholes: The integrated thumbholes are a must-have for runners. They keep your sleeves in place, offer a little extra hand warmth, and are essential for smooth layering under a shell jacket.
- Reflective Elements: Strategically placed reflective details ensure visibility during low-light hours (early mornings, evenings), a crucial safety feature for road runners.
The Active Fleece Bottom Layer (Jogger / Pant)
The Women’s Active Fleece Jogger and Men’s Active Fleece Jogger (or similar Active Fleece Tight/Pant) instantly upgrade your winter running routine. Ditch the saggy sweats; these bottoms are built to move.
- The Feel: The soft-brushed Merino next-to-skin is a game-changer. It provides instant warmth upon stepping outside, eliminating the shock of cold fabric. Critically, the fabric does not feel overly hot or restrictive once you’re moving.
- Running Functionality:
- Secure Storage: The inclusion of two secure zippered side pockets is perfect for securing small valuables like a car key or ID without bouncing. I would not recommend running with a smartphone in these pockets though (see “Pockets – A Nit” below).
- Adjustable Comfort: An interior waist drawcord ensures the fit is locked in for zero slippage, a major win for distance runners.
- Tapered/Slim Fit: The modern jogger silhouette offers a relaxed look for pre- and post-run, but the technical fit is slim enough through the legs to prevent fabric bulk or flapping during high speeds.
- Weather Protection (Check for “Wind” models): For runners facing truly bitter conditions, look for the Active Fleece Wind variations, which feature windproof panels and a DWR finish on the exterior for protection against unexpected elements like wind gusts and light snow.
Pockets – A Nit
I always carry a smartphone whenever I move – running, cycling, rucking, hiking, travel. I may carry more (ID, passport, wallet, etc.) but at minimum, a smartphone. Unfortunately, the zippered side pocket on the jogger does bounce and it gets annoying, so I ended up using a bicep arm-strap phone holder. Try running around with it before you start your full run…
For all non-running movements, these secure zippered side pockets work great!
The best running pant (joggers or tights) non-bouncing pockets have zippered pockets in the rear below the waist. For tights, they’re usually on the side of the thighs. The Smartwool Active Fleece Wind Tight is perfect for that.
| Item | Best use for runners | Fabric/feel highlights | Runner‑friendly features |
| Women’s Active Fleece Full Zip | Cool to cold‑weather runs as a top or midlayer | Light fleece with merino next to skin and recycled synthetic outer; stretchy, warm, breathable. | Thumbholes, reflective elements, two zip pockets, regular fit that layers easily. |
| Women’s Active Fleece Jogger | Cold‑weather easy runs, warmups, recovery days | ~265 g/m² knit; slim/regular fit with soft‑brushed merino lining. | Stretch fabric, secure pockets, reflective hits; cozy but not overly bulky. |
| Men’s Active Fleece Jacket | High‑output winter runs and cross‑training | Lightweight four‑way stretch fleece; merino against skin, recycled outer; odor‑resistant and quick‑drying. | Reflective details, thumbholes, two zip pockets, hip‑length cut for layering. |
| Men’s Active Fleece Jogger | Cold‑weather road and trail run, general training | Stretchy knit with soft‑brushed merino interior and durable recycled exterior. | Slim fit, adjustable waist/legs, reflective elements, zip pockets for keys/cards. |
Conclusion: Stop Searching, Start Running
The Smartwool Active Fleece collection successfully bridges the gap between cozy lifestyle wear and demanding high-performance gear. For the active runner, these pieces deliver on the three pillars of cold-weather success: warmth, stretch, and non-stop odor control.
If you’re tired of swapping layers mid-run or settling for clammy, heavy fleece, the Active Fleece line is the upgrade your winter training deserves.
