The new Xero Shoes TerraFlex is a high-performance, true minimalist trail running and hiking shoe. Ever since thousands of Xero Shoes fans have taken their first Xero Shoes running shoe, the Prio, out on the trail, they wanted more grip, more traction, and more protection. Naturally, TerraFlex is born.
Built with the same DNA as the Xero Shoes Prio, TerraFlex lets your feet move, bend, flex and feel, the way they’re meant to. Then add a lugged sole for grip and embedded 3mm of Barefoam™ inside the sole, you now have extra protection and comfort. Finish it with a durable Tough Tek toe bumper and more aggressive breathable mesh upper, you now have the new TerraFlex trail running and hiking shoe.

My wear tester lives on the island of Borneo who is an architect and has been working on various jungle resorts frequently visited by the rich and famous. He treks into the lush vegetation on a daily basis when on site. Or skateboarding or scuba diving otherwise. Oh, the outdoor life… Here’s the review of Xero Shoes TerraFlex as reported by my remote wear tester:
- Visual – Dark olive color and subtle reflective striping is very well integrated. Can also be worn as an urban shoe.
- Fit – Fits much better than the Prio and toes don’t feel crunched at the end with lots of room to spread your toes. Great for those with wide feet. The shoe opening is snugly enclosed but not overly tight.
- Sole – The design pattern is very similar to the Vivobarefoot Trail Freak, only more spread out, have good traction but have to get used to the softer sole – initially it feels unsupported. Almost feels like it conforms to your feet.
- Body – Not sure if material is water resistant. Depending on the terrain you’re in, the mesh uppers material might be susceptible to thorn snags in jungle trails. Front toe wrap is a good touch for protection.
- Laces – Good system, nice and solid.
- Weight – Visually looks heavy but light.
Compared to the Xero Shoes Prio, TerraFlex is a ‘true’ trail running and hiking shoe. It is also low key, not flashy like the Prio, but with a tougher look and feel. Excellent to pack and carry on your trips.
A note about sizing…
The Xero Shoes TerraFlex does run small and I sized up by 1/2 size for my wear tester. Xero Shoes recommend choosing 1/2 size larger than your usual size.
Currently, the TerraFlex is ON SALE so save you can save 20% (that’s $20!) through February 26th.
