Meet the ultra-lightweight road runner from VIVOBAREFOOT

Posted on April 19, 2025April 19, 2025

The VIVOBAREFOOT Primus Flow is a lightweight barefoot shoe designed for road running, cross-training, and casual wear. The Primus Flow is ideal for experienced barefoot enthusiasts looking for a versatile shoe that excels in lightweight performance. It’s also great for runners who prefer minimalistic footwear with a natural feel. However, beginners who are new to barefoot running or those needing extra cushioning might want to consider alternatives.

VIVOBAREFOOT has been true to its roots and vision of reconnecting people into the natural world with barefoot minimalist shoes. There is however no lightly cushioned transitioning shoe model to transition safely from traditional running shoes to barefoot minimalist running shoes like the VB Primus Lite or Primus Flow.

Primus Flow Key Features

  • Ultra-Lightweight Design: Weighing around 5.9 ounces for my US Size 10, the Primus Flow is one of the lightest shoes in the VIVOBAREFOOT lineup.
  • Zero-Drop Sole: A 4mm midsole with minimal padding provides a natural barefoot feel while maintaining some protection.
  • Wide Toe Box: Offers enough room for natural toe splay, though it tapers slightly at the tip.
  • Breathable Vegan Upper: The thin mesh upper is highly breathable and lightweight, making it ideal for warm weather or indoor use.
  • Hybrid Tread Pattern: Designed for road and light trail use with decent grip on dry surfaces.

What To Look For in the Primus Flow

  • Breathability and Comfort – The upper material is thin and breathable, keeping your feet cool during runs or workouts. The collar and ankle area are soft, reducing irritation. No hot spots or blisters wearing the Primus Flow sockless.
  • Versatility – Works well for road running, treadmill sessions, lifting weights, and casual wear. The low stack height and firm sole make it excellent for activities requiring stability, like deadlifts or plyometric exercises.
  • Barefoot Feel – Provides excellent ground feedback for those who enjoy a barefoot experience. Encourages a natural forefoot strike while running – my favorite tools for family and friends who wants to transition to minimalist shoes.
  • Secure Fit – The scalloped laces grip well and stay tied, offering a snug fit without pressure points.
  • Lightweight Construction – Perfect for those looking for a shoe that feels almost weightless during activities.
Pressure Plate showing Sensory Feeling – Maximize Proprioception with the VB Primus Flow!

What To Watch Out For in the Primus Flow

  • Limited Cushioning – With no removable insole and minimal padding, this shoe might not suit beginners transitioning to barefoot running or those who need extra cushioning for long runs on hard surfaces. Transition using shoes like Altra Escalante to bridge the gap.
  • Heel Rub Issues – The higher heel collar can cause discomfort or rubbing at the Achilles tendon, especially during sprints or extended runs. I don’t wear socks so I can feel it much more. If you are wearing ankle socks, you might still feel it – should not be an issue if you are wearing regular socks.
  • Not Ideal for Wet or Cold Conditions – The lightweight mesh upper offers little protection against cold or wet weather, making it more suitable for warm climates or indoor use.
  • Grip on Wet Surfaces – While the hybrid tread works well on dry roads and light trails, it may be slippery on wet terrain due to reduced surface area contact.
  • Fit Limitations – Best suited for medium to slightly wide feet; those with very wide feet might find the fit restrictive in some areas.

Caution

Barefoot running is a journey, not a race. To prevent injury, take it slow – learn how to stand, walk, and squat barefoot first before attempting to run.

What Primus Model Should You Choose?

The Primus Flow is better suited for someone looking for a lightweight, versatile shoe that performs well across multiple activities while maintaining a minimalist feel.

The Primus Lite 3.5, with its focus on eco-friendly materials and added comfort features like the Ortholite insole, is ideal for those who want a “do-it-all” barefoot shoe primarily for gym use, short runs, or casual wear.

Review Conclusions

The VIVOBAREFOOT Primus Flow is a solid choice if you’re after a breathable, lightweight shoe that performs well across multiple activities like road running, gym workouts, and casual wear. However, its minimal cushioning and lack of weather resistance limit its versatility in certain conditions.

Available in many colorways including Bright White-Neon Orange, Coconut, and Dark Shadow.
