I have posted about the Altra Escalante 4 SW earlier this year – my favorite travel & walking shoe. In this review, I have followed up with the Escalante 4 for running and rucking (power walking with a weighted backpack or rucksack).
The Altra Escalante 4 SW Smartwool Edition is a unique collaboration between Altra Running and Smartwool, combining Altra’s popular running shoe design with Smartwool’s expertise in Merino wool. This special edition offers a blend of comfort, performance, and versatility that makes it suitable for both running and rucking.
Design and Comfort
The standout feature of the Escalante 4 SW is its Smartwool Merino blend upper. This isn’t just a fancy addition; it’s a game-changer for comfort and temperature regulation. The Merino wool keeps your feet warm when it’s cold and cool when it’s warm, making it great for various weather conditions. Plus, it naturally fights odors, so your feet (and shoes) won’t stink after a long run or ruck.
The shoe follows Altra’s signature design principles:
- Zero Drop: Your heel and forefoot are at the same height, encouraging a more natural running form.
- Wide Toe Box: Gives your toes room to spread out, which is great for comfort on long runs or rucks.
Performance for Running
The Escalante 4 SW is versatile enough for several types of runs:
- Daily Training: The cushioning is exactly right for everyday runs.
- Speed Work: It’s responsive enough for when you want to pick up the pace.
- Long Distances: The comfort and cushioning hold up well for longer runs.
The midsole uses Altra’s EGO foam, which provides a nice balance of softness and bounce. This means you get comfort for long distances but also some pep in your step when you want to go faster.
The merino wool upper offers warmth in cooler conditions without causing overheating, thanks to its natural breathability – I have proven that in my hot & humid Asia trip last year (see post). The zero drop platform and flexible sole encourage a natural stride, which can be beneficial for those looking to improve their running form.
However, if you’re new to zero drop shoes, it’s advisable to transition gradually to allow your body to adapt (see Transitioning section below).
Performance For Rucking
While not specifically designed for rucking, the Escalante 4 has features that make it suitable:
- Stability: The low-to-ground design (24mm stack height) provides good stability, which is crucial when carrying extra weight.
- Durability: The outsole is tough, withstanding wear and tear well, which is important for the extra stress of rucking.
- Comfort: The roomy toe box and comfortable upper are beneficial for long distances with added weight.
Even though designed for running, the Escalante 4 with its comfortable fit, cushioning, and durable outsole make it a viable option for rucking, especially on paved surfaces. The roomy toe box and flexible design can accommodate the foot’s natural expansion under load. However, for rugged or slippery terrains or heavier weights, a shoe specifically designed for hiking or rucking might offer better support and protection – I switched to my pair of Altra Superior for slippery terrains.
Durability and Build
- Upper: The Merino wool blend is surprisingly durable and keeps its shape well.
- Outsole: It’s tough stuff. In my travel to Asia last year, after over 100 miles, and with over 50 more miles running & rucking, it barely showed any wear!
Weight and Flexibility
At 8.4 oz (237g), it’s on the lighter side for running shoes, which is a plus for both running and rucking. The shoe is also super flexible, allowing your foot to move naturally.
Versatility
One of the best things about this shoe is its versatility. It’s not just for running – it is also an excellent walking and travel shoe. This makes it a great option if you’re looking for a pair of shoes that can manage your runs, rucks, and everyday wear.
Bottom Line
The Altra Escalante 4 SW Smartwool Edition is a unique shoe that offers a lot for both runners and ruckers. Its combination of comfort, natural foot positioning, durability, and versatility make it a solid choice for various activities. The Merino wool upper sets it apart, offering excellent temperature regulation and odor resistance.
The ONE Shoe for TRAVEL, RUNNING, RUCKING, WALKING
Transitioning to Minimalist Shoes
The Altra Escalante 4 SW is a good transition shoe for runners moving from traditional running shoes (which have a raised heel) to zero-drop, minimalist-style footwear. But approach your transition carefully.
- Zero Drop (Heel-to-Toe Leveling)
- Unlike traditional running shoes that have a higher heel differential, the Escalante 4 has a zero-drop design. This encourages a more natural midfoot or forefoot strike rather than a heavy heel strike.
- If you’re used to running with a heel-striking pattern, this shoe will help you gradually adjust to a more natural gait.
- More Cushioning Than True Minimalist Shoes
- True minimalist shoes (like Vivobarefoot, Xero Shoes, or Merrell Vapor Glove) have little to no cushioning.
- The Escalante 4 has moderate cushioning (24mm stack height), which makes it more forgiving on your feet and legs during the transition phase.
- Flexible and Lightweight
- The midsole and outsole are soft and flexible, allowing your feet to move more naturally compared to stiff, structured running shoes.
- This helps strengthen foot muscles and tendons without the immediate shock of going fully minimalist.
- Wide Toe Box for Natural Foot Splay
- One of the biggest advantages of the Altra FootShape™ toe box is that it allows your toes to spread out naturally.
- This helps develop stronger foot muscles and improves balance, a crucial step in transitioning to minimalist running.
How to Transition to Zero Drop with the Escalante 4
Even though Escalante 4 is not fully minimalist, going from a high-heel-drop shoe to zero-drop can still cause strain if you transition too quickly. Here’s a gradual approach:
- Start with Walking & Short Runs
- Wear the Escalante 4 for casual walking and light workouts before running in them.
- Begin with short runs (5–10 minutes max) and increase gradually.
- Strengthen Your Feet & Lower Legs
- Since your Achilles tendon, calves, and foot muscles may be weak from wearing traditional running shoes, do exercises like:
- Toe raises
- Calf raises
- Barefoot walking on grass/sand
- Short barefoot runs on soft surfaces
- Since your Achilles tendon, calves, and foot muscles may be weak from wearing traditional running shoes, do exercises like:
- Gradually Increase in Running Distance
- Add 5–10% more distance per week to avoid overloading your Achilles and calf muscles.
- Listen to your body—if you feel pain in your calves, Achilles, or arches, slow down.
- Mix with Your Old Running Shoes
- Rotate between your old shoes and the Escalante 4 while your feet adjust.
- This helps avoid overuse injuries during the transition.
- Check Your Running Form
- Shorter strides and higher cadence (~180 steps/min)
- Midfoot or forefoot strike instead of heavy heel strike
- Engage your glutes and core for better posture
